Guangzhou - The 2022 World 5G Conference, co-hosted by the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, will be held from August 10 to 12. Under the theme of "Building 5G ecology and promoting common benefits", the event will accelerate the deep integration of 5G into various economic and social fields. New products, new models and new business forms of 5G will be created.

There are three major application scenarios in the 5G ecosystem. The first one is the high speed and large bandwidth enhanced mobile broadband eMBB, which is familiar to the general public and popular in the field of smart phones; The second is the low time delay and high reliability communication uRLLC applied to intelligent transportation and industrial automation; The third is the massive Internet of Things communication MMTCS that enable the Internet of everything. Among them, mMTC is the most special application field, which seeks to connect more diverse iot devices to 5G networks with lower power consumption. Many communication engineers are working hard to reduce the power consumption of 5G. For example, Qualcomm engineers have made important contributions to 5G RedCap technology. The technology, which supports lower transmission power and enhanced energy saving mode, can coexist with other 5G NR terminals and will promote more Internet of Things terminals to access 5G networks. RedCap technology also became a standard in the 5G Rel-17 version in June 2022. Another example is the wus(New signal Wake up) technology proposed by Qualcomm engineers. By reducing the monitoring of control signaling, the battery life of the terminal is extended, and the terminal can be kept on the network for a long time with low power consumption.

Dr. Lola Awoniyi-Oteri, chief system engineer of Qualcomm R&D Department, has made important contributions to improving the energy efficiency and mobility management of 5G communications. As one of Qualcomm's 5G inventors, Dr. Lola Awoniyi-Oteri holds more than 300 granted patents and patent applications in the field of wireless communications. In a previous interview, she explained that taking a technology from the lab to the user requires a complex process that engineers have worked hard to advance for years. Engineers often propose one or more solutions to an important problem that needs to be solved, prove their feasibility, and then submit the solution to the appropriate Standards setting Organization (SDO) and agree on a specification that defines the characteristics of wireless technology. The product team builds products and services based on the standards and finally delivers them to users.

5G is a process of continuous evolution, and more and more technical standards are included in the scope of 5G. For example, in the standard version of Rel-17, Qualcomm's technical inventions cover five fields including 5G's millimeter wave expansion, terminal experience, extended Internet of Things, network topology expansion, and non-ground network. There are 5G XR and connected car applications that support large bandwidth and low delay, and RedCap iot applications that support low bandwidth and low power consumption. While leading the technology, Qualcomm is also actively promoting the application of 5G to thousands of industries. For example, Qualcomm has carried out in-depth cooperation with industrial partners in mobile phones, automobiles, XR, Internet of Things and other fields to jointly boost the development of digital economy.
