Competition opened on December 17 at Riyue Bay National Surfing Training Base.
24 surfing teams from 15 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities
directly under the Central Government) and more than 200 competitors competed in
Riyue Bay.
This year's Wanning International Surfing Competition includes two national-level events: the 2023 National Surfing Championship and the National Surfing U Series Competition. The competition consists of four events: men's short board, women's short board, men's long board, and women's long board, which are divided into open groups, U18 groups, and U15 groups. The event also has team events and relay races.
According to the organizing committee of the event, the number of participating teams this year exceeded that of previous years, with a total of 24 teams participating. The Hainan team sent 24 elite athletes to participate, making it the largest team in this event. Qiu Zhuo, Huang Yingying, Yang Siqi and other well-known athletes also appeared on the field.
It is worth mentioning that professional surfing teams have been established in Xinjiang and Chongqing, and Wanning's excellent surfing conditions have attracted them to stay in Riyue Bay for training. At present, there are 7 professional surfing teams training in Riyue Bay all year round.
Zhang Min, director of the General Administration of Sport of China Aquatic Sports Management Center, said that Wanning Riyue Bay, as the best wave point in China, has held national surfing events for 13 consecutive years, laying a solid foundation for the improvement of China's surfing level and providing a platform for athletes to demonstrate their competitive level. The holding of this competition will test the training level of athletes throughout the year, and will also further promote the development and popularization of surfing in China.
Ye Nan, member of the Standing Committee of the Wanning Municipal Party Committee and deputy mayor, said that surfing culture is highly compatible with the spiritual core of Hainan Free Trade Port, and surfing has also become a bright business card for the Free Trade Port. Next, Wanning City will make every effort to promote the construction of the National Global Tourism Demonstration Zone and the Sports Tourism Demonstration Zone. Focusing on "One Bay and One Product", it will focus on the development of Riyue Bay surfing, Shimeiwan diving, and Shenzhou Peninsula motorboats. It will continue to promote the construction of the "Sports + Tourism + Culture + Consumption" system focusing on surfing, expand, strengthen and improve the Wanning surfing industry chain, and strive to promote the Wanning sports tourism industry to move towards a 10-billion-yuan industry.
