OPPO "5 times lossless zoom" technology to solve the problem of photography industry

On February 27, OPPO released the "5x lossless zoom" technology at MWC 2017. The technology can realize 5 times "clear" picture quality of mobile phone photos, solving a big problem in the industry.

The technology combines the advantages of optics and digital to create a lossless zoom in a thin body, making close-ups more vivid and expressive. This is an innovative breakthrough for the mobile phone industry.

Before that, what was lossless zoom like for phones

Looking at the development history of mobile camera, there are two main ways to achieve lossless zoom.

One is a traditional vertical structure. The optical zoom module needs to be perpendicular to the screen of the phone, which can be scaled up and down to resemble a camera with a small magnification card. However, the size of the module required to stand is so large that the fuselage tends not to be thin.

The other is the common double zoom. The wide Angle and telephoto end can be converted by switching two lenses with different focus segments. Although this method can solve the problem of fuselage thickness, it can only achieve a non-destructive zoom of two focus segments.

How is OPPO's "5x lossless Zoom" technology implemented?

OPPO has adopted a new structure inspired by the Periscope, hence the name "Periscope Structure". The Stealth lens module is only 5.7 mm thick, which is only about three coins thick, a thickness not seen in previous stealth lenses.

The stealthy-looking structure allows OPPO to achieve 3x optical zoom, and after high-precision 2x image fusion technology, it finally achieves the industry's 5x lossless zoom for mobile phones equipped with this technology.

In principle, the structure first passes through a prism to bend the incoming light 90 degrees, and then the light passes through the array of mirrors to the CMOS (yellow line on the right in the image above). The stealthy lens design keeps the phone from having a thick lens module due to a zoom lens compared to a traditional telescopic lens.

The introduction of new anti-shaking techniques

Lossless zoom is not enough to achieve OPPO's goal of "this moment, clearer". One of the biggest problems with telephoto photography, whether it's a camera or a phone, is that it doesn't shake.

In order to achieve clear imaging under 5x zoom, OPPO changed the design idea and applied the optical anti-shake technology to the telephoto lens. The telephoto lens and the special optical prism complete the optical anti-shake.

When many users take photos with mobile phones, the larger the zoom, the strong picture shake, the clarity of the picture quality and the imaging effect is not ideal.

Therefore, OPPO has made a new consideration for "5x lossless zoom" anti-shake system. The optical antiquation technique is applied to telephoto lens. Through the efficient cooperation between the special optical prism and the traditional antiquation module, the optical antiquation effect is better.

Compared with current dual-lens lenses, the "5x lossless zoom" technology more than doubles the optical anti-shake capability of mobile phone photos, while reducing the thickness by about 10 percent while improving the anti-shake performance by 40 percent.

According to the media who have experienced this technology at MWC, the anti-shaking effect of this technology will be greatly improved compared with the existing anti-shaking technology in the market at present, and the clear sense of photo quality can obviously feel the difference.

Published comparison proofs show that the quality of the average phone starts to drop after a typical 2x zoom, and the 5x falls significantly short. Even with OPPO at 5x zoom, the image is still clear and the lines on the petals are still discernable.

At present, there are three kinds of double photography on the market: 1. 2, long and short focal length double photography; 3. High and low pixel dual photography, and after OPPO's "5x lossless zoom" technology is officially commercialized, it will be increased to 4 kinds, and a new category of optical zoom dual photography will be added.

In short, "5x lossless zoom" from the details can indeed present better picture quality, can meet the needs of users to take clearer and further photos, will completely solve the problem of taking photos in the future.
