/PRCWT/Guangzhou, August 17, 2023——Recently, China Mobile Research Institute, Zhejiang Mobile and ZTE successfully completed the application verification of 5G-A intelligent metasurface RIS at the Hangzhou Asian Games, which can bring higher quality network coverage and provide more efficient communication network protection for the upcoming 19th Asian Games.
How to ensure high-quality network while reducing the difficulty of network construction and investment cost is an important problem faced by operators. Recently, the China Mobile Research Institute, Zhejiang Mobile and ZTE jointly completed the 5G-A intelligent metacurface RIS application verification at the Hangzhou Asian Games Cycling venue. Through the use of intelligent dynamic collaboration technology, the dynamic beam scanning and user tracking of intelligent metasurface are realized on site, which significantly improves the signal coverage quality and user rate, effectively meets the business needs of large capacity in the venue, and provides excellent network protection for the Asian Games.
Intelligent metasurface RIS is a new multi-antenna technology derived from electromagnetic metamaterials and is considered to be one of the key technologies in the 5G-A and 6G phases. It can improve 5G signal quality and expand base station coverage by optimizing base station signal propagation and beam control. This technology is important for enabling higher speed, more reliable communication and supporting future network evolution.
In addition, due to its low-cost, low-power characteristics, the application of intelligent metasurface has great potential in practical scenarios, providing more possibilities for the development of future networks. Based on the traditional metasurface, the dynamic RIS adopted in this verification introduces the dynamic collaboration technology of base station and RIS, and adopts the innovative scheme of Angle automatic optimization proposed by the research institute in beam management. The technology further improves base station coverage through collaborative beamforming of base stations and RIS, and ensures that users continue to enjoy a high-quality communication experience in mobile scenarios. The proposed technology lays a technical foundation for the application of intelligent metasurface.
After the deployment of dynamic intelligent metasurface in the Hangzhou Asian Games cycling arena, the wireless network coverage and user speed have been significantly improved, among which the maximum RSRP(reference signal receiving power) has been increased by 20dB, and the user speed has been increased several times. At the same time, when the user moves in the stadium, the dynamic intelligent metasurface reflected beam can still follow the user timely and accurately, and the signal strength and speed remain stable.
