Guangzhou, August 23, 2022 -- ACM SIGGRAPH, one of the world's leading computer graphics conferences, has concluded its schedule in Vancouver. The exhibition has gathered countless practitioners of computer graphics and graphics, and the new technologies and award-winning products released during the conference are monuments to the development of the AR/VR industry. At the conference, Wang Yuting, a designer from Shanghai, China, was invited by the ACM to present her latest work, Living Like an Olfactory Disordered. The work, a VR multi-sensory experience, debuted at ACM SIGGRAPH this year and attracted a lot of interest during the exhibition.

What's new about this film is that it's the first time we've distorted our perception of smell to explore our perception of smell. For example, viewers pick up a virtual apple in VR and smell an orange. By making the device emit mismatched odors, the designer enables the audience to experience the inconvenience caused by smell disorders in VR from the first perspective. "Olfactory disorder is an invisible disease, but it usually brings great inconvenience and potential danger to patients' lives," Wang said. This is why she created the VR film, because VR allows the audience to immerse themselves in three-dimensional scenes. This extremely realistic visual experience, combined with the olfactory perception system, can give people a deeper understanding of the disorder of smell. For example, the patient can't smell a fire in their home, or the smell of a favorite food makes them lose their appetite. The designers allow the audience to experience firsthand the daily struggles of those with a sense of smell disorder, making this VR film both innovative and very empathic.

It is reported that designer Wang Yuting graduated from Pratt Institute, one of the top three industrial design institutions in the United States. When she studied as an undergraduate in New York, there were no American universities that specifically offered AR/VR related courses, nor did there exist new terms like metaverse. The AR/VR industry as a whole is still in its early stages. However, she quickly discovered the development potential of AR/VR in the future, so she began to devote herself to self-learning how to design for the meta-universe. Her solid industrial design ability laid the foundation for three-dimensional design, allowing her to quickly adapt to creating content in the virtual world. From 2017 to 2020, she won a record four consecutive MIT AR/VR hackathons. As a graduate student, she continued her studies in design and engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. As a creative designer, she integrates design and engineering closely, and her work has made great achievements in the AR/VR field.

Her studio BroadAR has done well in various top competitions, such as the Auggie Award, VR Awards, She also won the SXSW Innovation Award, the prestigious Red Dot Award for Design, and the IDEA Award. It is worth mentioning that her latest paper "Derivative Design in VR" was included by ACM CHI, the world's top international conference on human-computer interaction. This paper mainly explores how to make the computer automatically generate countless interior design schemes in a few seconds, and then present the three-dimensional model of each scheme in the VR environment, so that users can easily pick the best among hundreds of design schemes. This innovative research is of great significance to design practitioners, as it indicates that designers can use VR smart design tools to greatly improve their productivity in the future. Now, with the rise of the meta-universe, more and more designers are gearing up to learn new skills and dabble in this new industry. The post-1995 designer Wang Yuting has been focusing on the research and development of AR/VR practical software, becoming a model of innovation for the new generation of metauniverse designers.
