Guangzhou, Aug 17, 2022 -- 5G has seen rapid development in China since 2019, expanding from mobile phones to transportation, medical care, manufacturing and energy, creating value for economic and social development. Among them, industry is one of the key areas of 5G application. According to data released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, by the first half of this year, the total number of "5G+ industrial Internet" construction projects has exceeded 3,100. Next, 5G will continue to accelerate its expansion from the auxiliary link of production to the core link, and continue to promote the development of industrial innovation. At the recently held World 5G Conference "5G and Industrial Revitalization Forum", Dr. Li Yan, Vice President of technical standards of Qualcomm, said in an invited speech that 5G industry applications are different from our experience of brushing short videos on mobile phones, and one of the important characteristics of enterprise applications is fixed location. Organize production and manufacturing in an area of several thousand square meters or even several square kilometers. In such an environment, the starting point and work optimization direction of improving service capability by using 5G are different from the 5G network experience based on mobile phones. Therefore, for the application of 5G in the industry, the industry puts forward the concept of 5G private network. With its technical advantages of high speed, low delay and wide connectivity, 5G can provide more support for industrial manufacturing application innovation and has a broad application space. Li Yan pointed out, for example, that the construction of 5G private networks can provide services for various production factors in the production link, which may include the control of robots, robotic arms and autonomous guided transport vehicles (AGVs) to realize the flow of production factors in the plant. Meanwhile, 5G can also be used for quality control to improve the efficiency and accuracy of quality detection. Once 5G gets to the factory floor, it can do a lot of good.
During the speech, Li Yan also shared specific application cases. Qualcomm has partnered with Bosch Rexroth to build smart factories using technologies such as 5G. In this case, Qualcomm provided communications equipment to remove all the cables throughout the production process. In addition, 5G base stations that support multipoint cooperative communication (CoMP) can also improve reliability and enable multiple connections. At the same time, based on the high-precision positioning of 5G, materials and production can be tracked in each link. For example, the 6-dimensional robot arm used in this case can photograph and monitor the whole material, and upload the shot to the server to realize the monitoring and management of production quality. At the same time, it can also position the AGV and plan the path to ensure the synchronous transmission of materials.
It can be seen that the application of 5G in the industrial field involves various aspects such as mobile communication technology, production and manufacturing, which requires in-depth cooperation from all parties in the industry. Li Yan said that the integration of 5G and industry is cross-industry integration, which does not mean that talents in the communication industry will transform the traditional manufacturing industry with 5G technology. The key players who can make 5G really work in the industry are experts from traditional manufacturing, not just those in the communications industry. Only when manufacturing experts master communication technology, computer technology and artificial intelligence technology, and let them optimize the whole life cycle of production, 5G will play a significant role in this industry. Forecast data show that 5G will generate $13.1 trillion of economic output globally by 2035, about 40 percent of which will come from industrial Internet-related applications. It can be seen that the integration of 5G and industrial Internet will not only promote the transformation and upgrading of traditional industries, but also bring huge economic value. In the future, Qualcomm will continue to enter vertical industries, share its technology and experience, and contribute to the further development of 5G industrial Internet in China.
