Guangzhou, August 15, 2022 -- Tech Talk 2022 5G-A/6G Forum was held at Harbin International Convention Center during the World 5G Conference 2022. In the forum, Dr. Xu Hao, head of research and development of Qualcomm China, delivered a keynote speech called "Continue to promote the development of 5G Advanced, Build the foundation for the future evolution of technology", analyzed the development law and future trend of 5G technology, and shared the application of Qualcomm integration of 5G, AI and XR technology in various vertical fields. Xu Hao first introduced the development law of mobile communication technology. The development cycle of each generation of mobile communication technology is about 10 years, so there is still a long time to push forward the development of 5G before the arrival of the next generation of 6G. Currently, 5G has experienced the development of Rel-15 to 17 versions, and the next 5G will usher in the update of Rel-18 to 20 versions, which are also collectively referred to as 5G Advanced in the industry. Xu Hao also explained that mobile communication technologies do not always develop linearly according to planning. In the process of technology research, if the technology under test is mature, it will be introduced into the standard in advance. For example, in the Rel-17 version, Internet of vehicles technology, 5G Internet of Things technology and 5G satellite antenna technology are introduced. These technologies will lay a good technical foundation for the next step of 5G Advanced development. For the development of 5G at the present stage, Xu Hao believes that the interaction and integration between 5G and AI is an important trend. Both 5G and AI are considered very core and basic technologies that can be applied to various industries. 5G technology makes the implementation of AI better, more convenient and easier to achieve. AI could also solve many of 5G's problems. Xu Hao highlighted four directions for AI to help 5G development. First, further enhance channel feedback of 5G large-scale MIMO system through AI; Second, the beam tracking and prediction of moving millimeter wave; Third, 5G high-precision positioning supported by sensor fusion; Fourth, 5G millimeter wave network topology optimization.
What are the new application hotspots of 5G? Xu Hao is optimistic about the development of the metaverse. The characteristics of 5G with low delay and large bandwidth just meet the requirements of huge bandwidth throughput and extremely low delay of the meta-universe. Based on technologies such as 5G, AI and computer vision, the metaverse will integrate the physical world with the digital world, bringing new development opportunities. Xu Hao introduced a case of 5G+XR metauniverse cooperation. Recently, Qualcomm, China Mobile and China Hertz Group jointly applied the separation rendering technology solution to sports events in Beijing Workers' Stadium to build a "metauniverse of workers' sports", which will provide the audience with the ultimate immersive XR watching experience. Xu Hao said that Qualcomm will continue to push forward the evolution of 5G technology.
