/ Asahi/Guangzhou, January 18, 2022 -- Samsung today announced the launch of its new high-end mobile processor Exynos 2200. This is a newly designed mobile processor with a powerful Samsung Xclipse graphics processing unit (GPU) based on the AMD RDNA 2 architecture. With the advanced Arm® based CPU core and upgraded neural processing unit (NPU) currently on the market,Exynos 2200 will enable a better mobile gaming experience while enhancing the overall experience of social media applications and photography.

Yongin Park, president of System LSI business at Samsung Electronics, said, "The Exynos 2200 provides smartphone users with superior performance experience based on the advanced 4-nm extreme ultraviolet lithography process combined with cutting-edge mobile device, GPU and NPU technologies. With Xclipse, we have developed a new mobile GPU using AMD's RDNA 2 graphics technology. With the help of enhanced graphics and AI performance,Exynos 2200 will bring a new mobile gaming experience. Xclipse is our first step in graphics innovation. Samsung is committed to bringing great mobile experiences to users, and Samsung will continue to innovate in logic chips."

For the first time on a mobile device, Samsung has introduced hardware-accelerated ray-tracking technology for better gaming

Xclipse GPU is a very special hybrid graphics processor between console and mobile graphics processor. "Xclipse" is a combination of the "X" for Exynos and "eclipse." We're betting that our new product will have the power of an eclipse and unlock exciting new gaming experiences.

Based on the high-performance AMD RDNA 2 architecture,Xclipse inherits advanced graphics features such as hardhardware accelerated ray tracing (RT) and Variable Rate Shader (VRS) previously only available on PCS, laptops, and game consoles.

Ray tracing is a revolutionary technology that vividly mimics the physical behavior of light in the real world. Ray tracing generates realistic lighting effects for graphically rendered scenes by calculating the motion and color characteristics of light as it bounces off a surface. To create immersive graphics and user experiences on mobile devices, Samsung partnered with AMD to implement hardware-accelerated ray-tracking technology on mobile Gpus.

Variable rate coloring is a technique that optimizes GPU workloads by allowing developers to use lower coloring rates in areas that don't affect overall quality, giving the GPU more room to handle areas that are most important to the player, and increasing the frame rate for smoother gameplay.

In addition,Xclipse Gpus are equipped with a variety of technologies, such as the Advanced Multi-IP Governor (AMIGO), which improves overall performance and efficiency.

"The AMD RDNA 2 Graphics architecture brings energy efficient, advanced graphics solutions to PCS, laptops, game consoles, cars and now smartphones," said David Wang, senior vice President, AMD Radeon Technology Group. Samsung's Xclipse GPU is the first result of the multi-generation AMD RDNA graphics initiative in Exynos SoC, and we can't wait for mobile customers to experience great gaming experiences based on our technology collaboration."

Enhanced 5G connectivity and robust security

The Exynos 2200 is one of the products on the market that integrates Arm's latest Armv9 CPU core, providing significant security and performance improvements over Armv8. Both are becoming increasingly important in today's mobile devices.

The Exynos 2200's octa-core CPU is designed with a tri-cluster architecture, consisting of a powerful Arm Cortex®-X2 flagship core, three large performance and efficiency balanced Cortex-A710 cores, and four small energy efficient Cortex-A510 cores.

"The future of digital experiences calls for higher levels of performance, security and power efficiency," said Rene Haas, President of Arm's IP Products Division. As one of the first processors to feature the new Armv9 CPU core, the Samsung Exynos 2200 leverages Arm's comprehensive computing strategy and safety-critical features such as memory markup Extension (MTE) to deliver the dedicated computing and professional processing needed for future mobile experiences."

With an upgraded NPU, the Exynos 2200 provides more powerful on-device AI capabilities. Compared to its predecessor, the NPU doubles performance, allowing for more parallel computing and enhanced AI performance. In addition to the energy efficient INT8(8-bit integer) and INT16, Npus now offer higher accuracy and support for FP16(16-bit floating-point).

In addition, the Exynos 2200 integrates a high-speed 3GPP Release 16 5G modem that supports the sub-6GHz and millimeter-wave bands. It takes advantage of both 4G LTE and 5G NR signals and speeds up to 10Gbps with the E-UTRAN new Radio -- Dual Connect (EN-DC).

At the security level, the Exynos 2200 is equipped with an Integrated Security element (iSE) for storing private encryption keys and functioning as a RoT(Root of Trust). In addition, the inline encryption hardware of UFS(Universal flash storage) and DRAM has been enhanced so that user data encryption is only securely shared within a secure domain.

Provides an enhanced visual experience and professional-grade graphics

The Exynos 2200's image signal processor (ISP) architecture has been redesigned to support an all-new image sensor, enabling ultra-high resolution of up to 200 million pixels (200MP). At 30 frames per second (fps), the ISP supports up to 108MP in single shot mode and 64MP+36MP in dual shot mode. It is also capable of connecting up to seven separate image sensors and can support the simultaneous operation of four cameras for advanced multicamera capabilities. In terms of video recording, ISPs support resolutions up to 4K HDR(or 8K).

Along with NPU,ISP utilizes advanced content-aware AI cameras to achieve more detailed and realistic results. When taking a picture, the machine learning-based AI camera recognizes multiple objects, environments and faces in a scene and then applies the appropriate color, white balance, exposure, dynamic range and other Settings to produce professional-quality images.

Exynos 2200 brings video to life with its advanced Multi-format Codec (MFC) supporting 8K resolution. It can decode 4K video at 240fps, or 8K video at 60fps, and encode 4K video at 120fps, or 8K video at 30fps. In addition,MFC is integrated with an efficient AV1 decoder for longer playback times. The advanced display solution supports HDR10+, giving the picture a wider dynamic range and depth, and supports a display refresh rate of up to 144Hz for a more responsive and fluid experience when swiping or playing games.

Currently, the Exynos 2200 is in mass production.
