Canada's Pratt & Whitney has signed an agreement to supply its PW150C engine to power the Shinzhou 700 aircraft

"The PW150C is built on the proven PW150A engine architecture and will use the latest technology to deliver performance and fuel efficiency to the redesigned Shinzhou 700 aircraft," said Frederic Lefebvre, vice president of marketing at Cappratt & Whitney. "The improvements we have made to the PW150C include advanced efficiency technology, materials and manufacturing processes, including a third-stage power turbine, improved reduction gearbox to support the aircraft's larger diameter propellers, and low pressure compressor optimisation."

Control of the PW150C engine will be integrated with the avionics and control systems of the Xinzhou 700 aircraft to reduce pilot workload. It will provide better dispatch attendance and reliability in the high temperature and plateau environment of western China.

"So far, we have agreed on the definition of mechanical interfaces and will soon conclude the definition of control and functional interfaces," said Mr Leeford. The engine has entered the detailed design stage and will support AVIC's first aircraft rolling off the assembly line and flight test program."

Avic's selection of the PW150C engine to power its New Zhou-700 aircraft is a testament to Cappratt & Whitney's continued innovation in regional aviation. The move also further expands Cappratt & Whitney's relationship with China's fast-growing aerospace industry.

Cappratt & Whitney has a long relationship with AVIC dating back to the late 1980s, when PT6 engines were chosen to power its Y-12 commuter aircraft. The relationship with AVIC was further strengthened in the early 1990s through the development of the Xinzhou 60 and Xinzhou 600 aircraft powered by the PW127J engine in partnership with Xi 'an Aircraft Corporation. To date, more than 100 Xinzhou 60 aircraft have been delivered to operators in China and elsewhere.
