On November 12, Samsung revealed at the launch event of its new flagship mobile processor Exynos 1080 that vivo is involved in the development of this processor and will launch the Exynos 1080 terminal products. On December 16, vivo officially confirmed that its next-generation X-series flagship X60 series will debut with Samsung's Exynos 1080 processor. As a flagship processor product, Samsung Exynos 1080 adopts the industry's most advanced 5nm EUV FinFET technology and ARM's new flagship architecture IP Cortex-A78 and Mali-G78, which not only provides strong performance, but also further upgrades in 5G, smart imaging, performance and experience.
With the advent of 5G commercial era, more advanced mobile communication technologies continue to refresh user experience, but also put forward higher requirements for mobile processors, especially strong performance to support consumers to achieve streaming media social networks, high-definition intelligent images, immersive game experience and other applications. Meanwhile, the power consumption of mobile devices in the 5G era has become one of the most concerned issues for users. vivo and Samsung collaborated again to create the Exynos 1080 flagship mobile processor through comprehensive, whole-process joint research and development.
vivo has teamed up with Samsung to develop the 5nm flagship mobile processor
To achieve flagship performance and reduce power consumption, vivo and Samsung first chose to use the industry's most advanced 5nm EUV process and ARM's latest Cortex-A78 and Mali-G78 architecture combination. The Exynos 1080's 5nm process increases the number of transistors density by more than 80% over the previous 7nm process, achieving greater performance and lower power consumption. Architecturally, in the Exynos 1080 tri-cluster CPU system, the octa-core CPU combines a top-performing Cortex-A78 core (up to 2.8GHz), three high-performance Cortex-A78 cores, and four high-performance Cortex-A55 cores. Making its CPU performance almost double that of its predecessor. Meanwhile, the new ARM GPU, Mali-G78, based on the second-generation Valhall architecture, more than tripled the performance of the Exynos 1080's GPU, allowing it to process pictures faster and run large video games smoothly.
In view of the power consumption problems caused by the characteristics of big data traffic and scattered transmission of background applications in the 5G era, vivo adjusted and optimized the CP-engine(Modem accelerator) and multi-transmission mode architecture and power, greatly improved the data transmission efficiency, and also improved the efficiency of rapid wake up and sleep of the system. The X60 series terminal equipped with Exynos 1080 is expected to reduce power consumption by at least 20% compared to vivo X30. vivo's pursuit of power consumption and performance is not limited to the most advanced process and IP, but also adds the upgraded Multi-Turbo at the terminal level. Through the pre-evaluation of application computing power, and more reasonable and flexible CPU/GPU frequency scheduling, the system efficiency and the whole machine service time are effectively improved.
vivo comprehensively improves Exynos 1080 video and game experience based on consumer demand
vivo has always taken consumer demand and technological innovation as its development direction, and has been deeply engaged in the field of imaging for a long time. It can be said that imaging has become one of vivo's dominant genes. In the design and development process of Exynos 1080, vivo expert teams in San Diego, Shenzhen, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Dongguan and other places in the United States communicated with Samsung expert teams actively. Based on the cooperation of the first-generation Exynos 980, through one and a half years of iteration and upgrade, New ISP architecture (AISP) and NPU access points are imported on top of Exynos 1080, making the use of AI in image taking and video more convenient and real-time, and further upgrading the intelligent automatic white balance, automatic exposure, noise reduction and other functions. In addition, the hardware noise reduction module and super clear and super fast continuous shooting functions are added for night shooting and sports shooting. We believe that with the support of Exynos 1080 industry exclusive intelligent image AISP architecture, vivo X60 series will bring professional video experience to users.
In addition, vivo, after a year of consumer market observation and technology prediction, found that the high refresh rate of the screen did not match the actual refresh rate of the application/game completely, which would easily lead to problems such as picture delay and broken in the process of user use. Therefore, vivo introduced the dynamic frame rate adaptive technology on Samsung platform for the first time based on users' pain points and the future development trend of game video, to avoid the misframe problem caused by the mismatch between game content frame rate and screen refresh rate, and provide users with smoother game and video experience.
The Exynos 1080 also integrates 5G NSA/SA dual-mode modem, supports 5G NR Sub-6, millimeter wave and other bands, supports download speeds of up to 5.1Gbps, and enables greater global network coverage.
vivo's strong technology accumulation helps promote joint research and development to continuously promote the development of 5G industry
The Exynos 1080 is the second mobile processor chip vivo and Samsung have collaborated on since becoming partners, following the Exynos 980. Through Exynos 980, Exynos 1080 two generation product vivo out of a chip joint research and development innovation road. During the Exynos 1080 design and development process, vivo invested more than 50 technical experts 18 months in advance from June 2019 to jointly define the flagship configuration with Samsung. It includes the selection of 5nm EUV FinFet process, the selection of ARM's latest flagship Cortex-A78 CPU core and Mali-G78 GPU core, the formulation of RGB scaler (RGB color standardization), adding CLAHE image algorithm, etc. In addition, vivo incorporated years of understanding of consumer usage scenarios and real-world needs into the development process of the Exynos 1080 flagship processor. During the whole joint research and development period, vivo invested more than 1400 people including technical specification experts, electronic development engineers, software engineers, image engineers, quality test engineers and so on to live in the factory and send the team in turn, and solved more than 13,000 problems at the software level and more than 1,000 problems at the hardware level.
vivo and Samsung have jointly researched and developed chips twice, integrating their technical strength and brand accumulation to jointly promote the development of 5G chip industry. "Samsung has been in the mobile chip business for years," said Jia Mo, an analyst at Canalys. "Smartphones with Exynos chips now account for about 15 per cent of the global handset market. Its latest flagship chip, the Exynos 1080, is another big step up in performance. By continuing to work with Samsung LSI's Exynos line of chips, vivo is able to offer increased flexibility in the mid - and high-end series, and with the Exynos 1080's performance leap forward, vivo has an element of differentiation that is currently lacking in the handset market." We believe that vivo X60 series equipped with Exynos 1080 processor will bring consumers more outstanding 5G application experience.
