On July 1, 1867, Britain incorporated the provinces of Canada, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia into the Commonwealth, becoming the first British self-governing territory. Since then, other provinces have joined the Union. 1926 Canada gained diplomatic independence when Britain recognized Canada's "equal status."

In 1931, it became a member of the Commonwealth, and its parliament was given equal legislative powers to the British Parliament, but it still had no constitutional amendment power. In 1982, the British Queen signed the Canadian Constitution Act, giving the Canadian Parliament full power to make and amend the Constitution.
