Dubai (Arabic: Gakanbo, Dubayy; Dubai), is the most populous city in the United Arab Emirates and the capital of the Emirate of Dubai, one of the seven emirates in the country. Dubai is a flat desert facing the Persian Gulf in the middle of the Middle East. Covering an area of about 4,114 square kilometers, it accounts for 5.8% of the total area of the UAE, ranking second after ABU Dhabi. With a population of about 3,392,408 (as of June 2020), it is the most populous city in the UAE, accounting for about 41.9% of the total population. In 2016, the gross National Product of the Emirate of Dubai was 376.8 billion dirhams (about $102.9 billion).

Dubai is the economic and financial center of the Middle East. It is also a major transportation hub for passengers and goods in the Middle East. Oil revenues fueled Dubai's early development, but limited reserves and low production levels mean that oil accounts for less than 5 percent of Dubai's gross domestic product since 2010. After oil, Dubai's economy is largely based on tourism, aviation, real estate and financial services.

Dubai also attracts the world's attention with major construction projects and sporting events, including the world's tallest man-made structure, the Burj Khalifa, and the world's largest man-made island project, the Palm. In 2018, GaWC rated it as the ninth first-tier city in the world
