Pratt & Whitney Engine Centre Singapore will be part of Pratt & Whitney's industry-leading global network of maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) suppliers providing high-quality maintenance support to geared turbofan engine operators, including Pratt & Whitney, MTU Aero Engines, Japan Aero Engines and Lufthansa Technologies.

"Asia is home to many of the airlines that will be operating the geared turbofan powered A320neo aircraft, and expanding our MRO network to support our customers in the region is a strategic decision for us," said Kevin Kirkpatrick, Pratt & Whitney's executive director of Asia Pacific aftermarket operations.

Tan Kong Hwee, director of Transport engineering at the Singapore Economic Development Board, said: "We welcome Pratt's investment in Singapore to maintain its advanced geared turbofan engines. This addition highlights Singapore's competitiveness and attractiveness as a place to conduct aviation MRO business, as well as our strong partnerships with Oems such as Pratt & Whitney. The new capabilities our engineering staff will acquire will strengthen our leadership position in the MRO industry in the region."

Pratt & Whitney Singapore Engine Centre will provide maintenance services to PW1100G-JM engines. An expected capital investment of nearly $85 million will add advanced capabilities to the center, including an environmental control system and an engine pipeline system. Pratt & Whitney expects work on the center to begin in 2018 and service for geared turbofans to begin in 2019.

Mr Kirkpatrick said: "The addition of geared turbofan capabilities to our engine overhaul Centre in Singapore complements our current capability to support the existing PW4000 engine fleet. For example, we will upgrade the test stand, which will ultimately increase productivity, reduce lead time and improve overall operational efficiency. Our existing PW4000 engine customers will benefit from these technology upgrades."

Wong Yue Jeen, Senior vice president of Partner Management and Business Development at SIA Engineering LTD (SIAEC), said: "Investing in geared turbofan capabilities is another milestone in our partnership with Pratt & Whitney and will position the engine center to capture the growth opportunities generated by numerous orders for geared turbofan powered A320neo aircraft in the region."

Pratt & Whitney Singapore Engine Centre is a joint venture between Pratt & Whitney and SIA Engineering Limited. The centre currently provides deep maintenance services for PW4000 and GP7200 engines, and will be ready to dismantle, assemble and test geared turbofans in 2019.

Geared turbofan engines set a new standard in the aviation industry. Geared turbofans improve fuel efficiency by 16%, reduce regulated emissions by 50% and reduce noise tracks by 75%.
